CBD and Psoriasis

CBD and Psoriasis

Today we will be discussing about a chronic disease called Psoriasis and how CBD may play a role in helping ease the symptoms, pain and inflammation.

The Mayo Clinic explains Psoriasis as a skin disease that causes a rash with itchy, scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk and scalp. Psoriasis is a chronic disease that has no cure. It causes a lot of pain and discomfort and can affect sleep or concentration. When psoriasis flares up the cycle takes a few weeks to months before it goes away. Cuts, burns, infections, medications and genetics are common triggers for psoriasis.

Different types of psoriasis includes: plaque psoriasis is the most common type of psoriasis-it causes dry, itchy and skin patches that normally appear in knees, lower back, elbow and scalp. Nail psoriasis appears in fingernails and toenails. It can cause abnormal growth in nails, discoloration, it may cause nails to loosen and in severe cases it can cause nails to crumble. Guttate psoriasis affects mostly children and young adults. It's triggered by bacterial infections and causes scaling spots on arms and legs. Inverse psoriasis mainly affects skin folds in the groin, buttocks and breast area. It causes patches of inflamed skins made worse by friction and sweat. Pustular psoriasis is very rare and it causes pus filled blisters more commonly in palms or soles. Erythrodermic psoriasis is the least common type of psoriasis. When it happens it can cover your entire body with a peeling rash that causes itchiness or tremendous burning sensation. This could be acute but only for a short period or last for long term.

Common symptoms of psoriasis may include:

● Patchy rashes that differ in patients. Some may have spots-like dandruff scaling or eruptions all over the body.

● Rashes that varies in colors depending on your skin color.

● Small scaling spots often found in children.

● Dry and cracked skin that can cause bleeding

● A cycle of flair that could last for weeks or months

You definitely need to see a doctor if symptoms become widespread and severe or when you are experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort. Your illness can affect concentration, mood and sleep too. Remember, psoriasis can affect changes in your appearance or skin therefore consulting and receiving treatment from a medical provider is beneficial.

Psoriasis treatments are meant to stop skin cells from growing rapidly and to remove scales. Methods of treatment may include: topicals that include creams and ointments, light therapy like using UV lights to battle psoriasis' symptoms, oral/injection medications like steroids or alternative treatment like vitamins or CBD. CBD can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain and discomfort. Researchers believe that CBD can help reduce plaques and improve quality of life.

CBD or Cannabidiol is a non-intoxicating compound found in cannabis and hemp plants. CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system in our body which helps regulate numerous matters such as mood, sleep, stress, anxiety, immune system, pain and most importantly for psoriasis inflammation. Endocannabinoids receptors can be found throughout the body and fortunately CBD can bind to the same receptors causing maximum health benefits. Researchers explain that certain cannabinoids (compounds found in cannabis plants likeCBD or THC) can bind to endocannabinoid receptors and are responsible for regulating inflammation and reducing inflammatory response.

CBD is also known to help reduce stress and anxiety. It can improve sleep and help your body to get the rest it needs. What does stress and anxiety have to do with psoriasis? Studies have shown that there is a relation between psoriasis and anxiety and depression. Anxiety can trigger symptoms of psoriasis. Emotional stress can cause damage to psoriasis.

A study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in 2020 showed that cannabinoids can have a positive effect in healing wounds, improving skin conditions and at the same time reducing anxiety and stress levels too.
