What is Warfarin?
In general terms, Warfarin is best for its ability to treat blood clots, but it can be used to treat heart attacks, stroke and more. Let's look into what Warfarin does, its
benefits and risks and how it works with CBD. Most importantly, whether or not CBD interacts with warfarin and what we need to know about them before adding both CBD and warfarin into your daily health routine.
Warfarin is part of the anticoagulant medication family. It is mainly used to treat blood clots. Help blood to flow to the veins more easily and prevent blood clots in your body which can be life threatening.
The use of warfarin does not stop at only blood clot, it is also prescribed for:
Thrombophilia (blood clot disorder)
During and post replacement of heart valve
Having atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat)
*Do note that blood clot medication like warfarin needs prescription from medical personnel only.
Things to Remember About Warfarin
Normally you will take warfarin once a day in the evening.
You need to have a blood test done every 3 months to make sure that your dosage is right.
The dosage may change through time depending on factors like: diet, alcohol consumption, medications and health.
Common side effects include: bleeding easily, nosebleeds, brusings, bleeding gums and having heavier periods. Some may experience hair loss or skin rash.
If you are prescribed with anticoagulant medication then your doctor will issue anticoagulant alert cards. Do present this card if you are visiting doctors or dentists.
Warfarin should not be taken during pregnancy unless you have a pre-existing heart condition then seek medical advice from your doctor.
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are already on heart medications, NSAID, cholesterol medication, antibiotics, miconazole or even natural health supplements like CBD.
Can You Use CBD With Warfarin?
For starters, scientists have found that CBD has a mild anticoagulant effect so it may act as a blood thinner, but we need more research on this matter.
It's essential to understand that there are various medications, herbal supplements and herbal products that can interact with CBD. This means that. When you take certain drugs with CBD they could compete for the same enzymes in the liver for metabolism resulting in an increase or decrease of the medications effects. In other words, there can be an increase or decrease in the desired effects which could be harmful to your body.
Drug interactions also depends on your:
Body and health
Dosage of medication
Dosage of CBD
It is essential that you discuss with your medical provider if you are planning on taking CBD with other medications.
So Does CBD Interact With Other Medications?
Yes, definitely! Should you use warfarin together with CBD? No.
When you take any medication it's automatically required for your body to metabolize it. The medications are broken down in order for your body to be able to absorb the effects of the medications. We call this process, the metabolic process.
When your body, especially the liver, is able to break down a medication without any disruption it can help your body to receive the most beneficial effects from the drug and is able to guarantee that the chemical effects from the medication will leave your body as soon as possible.
The Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) is the enzyme responsible for converting the chemicals from the drugs you take and making it easier for your body to convert it.
The CYP450 enzyme may be slowed down or become accelerated by medications or substances like CBD.
Some medications should not be mixed together. Some food should be avoided when taking some medication and CBD should not be mixed with some medications, especially with warfarin.
CYP450 enzyme is responsible for the metabolism of CBD and warfarin. This means that when you take both together they will compete for CYP450.
CBD can slow down the metabolism of warfarin making warfarin stay in your body for too long. CBD also increases the effects of warfarin. This could cause excessive bleeding or overdose
How To Take CBD and Warfarin Safely?
Any form of CBD products should not be taken together with warfarin or other blood thinners.
You should consider having a gap between administering CBD and warfarin at least for two hours to be safe. For instance take warfarin after dinner and drop CBD oil before sleep.
But to be on the safe side try using CBD on a different part of the day like for example in the morning or afternoon.
Consult your doctor if you are planning on taking CBD and warfarin. Discuss the benefits and risks.
