Panic Attack & Panic Disorder

Panic attacks can be a very traumatic experience. Unless you yourself go through it you will never understand it. Panic attack is a sudden rise of intense fear that occurs without warning. Panic attacks lead to significant physical reaction without being in any actual danger and without any apparent cause. It can be a very frightening ordeal and when people go through panic attacks they often feel as if they are losing control, having a heart attack or dying.

For everyday people, panic attacks may arise once or twice in a lifetime. The problem usually goes away on its own perhaps after an extremely stressful period. Recurring panic attacks and spending a lot of time living with the fear of having another attack may lead to Panic Disorder.

Root causes for panic attacks are: family history of panic attacks and panic disorder, stress, traumatic event, major changes in life, daily routines become disrupted, excessive smoking or caffeine consumption or history of childhood physical/sexual abuse.

Though panic attacks may not be life threatening, it can make everyday life difficult and having to live life in constant fear is painful.

As mentioned earlier if you have repeat occurrences of panic attacks you may have panic disorder. Panic disorder is a type of mental illness that usually starts during teen years or early adulthood. There are some cases where panic disorder is found in children as well. Statistics show that women are twice as likely to have panic disorder than men.

The John Hopkins University explains that panic disorder may be an overreaction of the body’s normal survival instincts and behavior. This kind of reaction will lead to hyper physical response like shortness of breath, swearing, trembling, feeling of choking, nausea, dizziness, lightheadedness, fear of losing control, feeling disoriented, disconnected with oneself, numbness and chills throughout the body.

Panic Disorder if left untreated can lead towards depression. As the disorder causes you to become somewhat disabled, living with the fear of the next panic attack makes it very difficult to cope with any task.

Traditionally, treatment for panic attacks and panic disorder would include anti-anxiety and antidepressant medication. Along with cognitive behavior therapy.

CBD for panic attacks and panic disorder

If you trace back through history you will find ancient texts describing the anxiolytic and antidepressant properties of CBD. People have been using CBD for a long time to alleviate stress and anxiety.

Recent studies have given us more information on how cannabinoids from the cannabis plant like CBD and THC can do for both our physical and mental health.

We know that THC when consumed in low to moderate amounts and especially if combined with at least 1% CBD can take away anxiety and stress. Even though THC can give you the calming effects, when used in high dosage considering your body’s tolerance of THC may cause a complete opposite effect and ending up with a high level of anxiety instead.

Latest research shows that CBD has substantial advantages for people that might be experiencing panic. In preclinical trials, researchers say that CBD is effective in reducing stress and anxiety levels. Pointing out that CBD can also be a remedy for anxiety disorders like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder), SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) or OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).

Researchers believe that the anxiolytic properties that help with stress and anxiety is a result from CBD's interactions with the CB1 receptors and 5-HTiA Serotonin receptors in different parts of the brain. More research is needed to understand the full effects of CBD with the brain.

Plus points for CBD when dealing with panic attacks, stress and anxiety:

  • CBD has minimal sedative effects

  • CBD does not have anxiety provoking properties or anxiogenic

  • CBD profile is safer than most anti-anxiety prescription medications

Medical experts share that SSRI, the typical medication prescribed for panic disorder, lacks consistency and is less effective for long term use. They also come with a lot of side effects and are the reason why patients do stop taking medication for their panic disorder.

However, they see CBD as a potential remedy for treating panic disorder. More research is needed to determine the best method for using CBD as a treatment and to be able to set up guidelines for the right and safe CBD dosage recommendation.

There are three different types of CBD. Each has its own pros and cons. CBD Isolate is considered to be the purest form of CBD as it has been extracted to just include CBD. CBD Isolate is THC free and great for people that don't want to worry about THC. Broad Spectrum contains CBD and other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids but is THC free. Broad Spectrum is great for people who want the maximum benefit from the cannabis plant without THC. Full Spectrum, just as its name, does come with lots of CBD and has THC, other cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids. Using Full Spectrum CBD can guarantee that your body will experience the “entourage effects". That's when all the components from the cannabis plant work together to deliver the maximum benefit.

Consider different CBD products and decide which one is right for you. Today CBD is available as oil, tincture, topicals, capsules, edibles or vaping oil to name a few. Each works differently with your body. Vaping CBD oil does make your body feel the effects from CBD faster, but it doesn't last as long as using CBD oil. With using the sublingual method (dropping oil under your tongue) it's roughly around 15-30 minutes before your body will feel the effects from CBD oil, but the effects last much longer than any other method.
