Survey In Denmark Shows More Than One Third of Pet Owners Give CBD To Their Dogs

CBD has gained massive popularity in the past few years. As a matter of fact according to a survey conducted by the Journal of the American Medical Association has seen an increase of CBD use by 50% and 1 out of 5 people surveyed have used CBD within the year. Yes, the trend for recreational and medicinal cannabis use is on the rise for humans, but availability of cbd-based products for pets are in demand too. Pet owners are looking for new alternative treatment for their beloved pets and CBD has proof to be a strong contender.

A recent survey shows that 38% of dog owners in Denmark admitted giving their dogs cannabinoids like CBD even though cannabis products are not yet legal for veterinary use in most countries including Denmark, still many pet owners are keen on trying products made from CBD to help improve their loyal pets.

The study was led by researchers from the University of Copenhagen with 2,002 survey participants. They hope to understand how common it is for pet owners to use cannabinoids for their dogs, what type they used and the purpose? They also wanted to know whether the owners found the cannabinoids effective or not?

58% percent of the participants from the survey said they have used at least one cannabinoid with their pets. 93% of people have used CBD drops/oil or CBD cream/ointment for their dogs and only 4% have used THC.

The reasons for using cannabinoids for their pets include: pain relief management, behavior issues, allergies, anxiety, seizures, cancer symptoms, appetite management, for general good health and others. 77% believe that CBD has impacted their pets in a positive way.

Currently, CBD for humans is legal in Denmark as long as the level of THC does not exceed 0.2% but cannabis used in pets is still prohibited. Despite this, pet owners still choose to use cannabinoids for their pets, because they believe that substances like CBD can have positive effects on their dog’s mental and physical health. However, there is not enough research being done on CBD regarding animals. We need to know and understand the full potential CBD has. Only then can experts come up with recommendations for a CBD treatment plan.
