Researchers from Rutgers University and University of Texas have recently published a paper stating that CBD can alleviate acute dental pain and could be a safer alternative to opiods prescribed for tooth/dental pain.
The paper has been published in the Journal of Dental Research and is the first randomized clinical trial for testing CBD in emergency dental pain management.
They pointed out that a single dose of CBD is as effective as the analgesics treatment that is currently used in dental clinics. They also found that CBD is effective in emergency dental pain management as well. Two big pluses for CBD here.
The study shows that CBD can be used to treat acute inflammatory pain instead of the traditional opioid-based medication. This could help limit the demand and necessity of opioids and essentially help to decrease the number of people being dependent on opioids. The opioid epidemic in America is a major public health issue. From 1999-2021 nearly 645,000 people have died from opioid overdose.
Some People choose to turn to over-the-counter painkillers like ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen to treat emergency dental pain. Method Used In The Research
Epidiolex, a FDA approved medication made out of pure CBD was used during the study. Epidiolex is traditionally used in treating certain severe types of epilepsy. Adults with moderate to severe toothache were given a single dose of either CBD-based solution or placebo and were monitored for 3 hours.
People that were given CBD were separated into two groups. First group received a higher dose of CBD (10 mg per kilogram of body weight) and the second group received a dose lower than 10 mg/kg.
Pain levels of the research subjects were measured, subjects that received cbd reported a significant reduction in pain when compared to before being administered with CBD or from the group that were given placebo. It was reported that the pain reduction period lasted as long as 180 minutes and it took 15-30 minutes before subjects started feeling the pain relief onset.
The strong results are compelling enough to make a good case for pushing CBD or CBD-based medication as a treatment for dental pain.
