A new University of Colorado Boulder study suggests CBD, a non-intoxicating cannabis compound, might be more effective for anxiety relief than THC-heavy products. This research, published in the journal Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, is the first randomized trial to explore commercially available legal cannabis and its impact on anxiety.
The study is particularly timely considering anxiety disorders affect one in five U.S. adults, making it the most common mental health issue. Additionally, prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications are steadily increasing.
Further studies are needed to understand the long-term benefits of CBD, but as for short-term benefits it is clear that CBD is able to reduce tension and anxiety without any major side effects.
In a groundbreaking study, researchers investigated the effects of cannabis on anxiety.
Many adults use cannabis like marijuana to manage anxiety, sleep problems, and pain. However, research hasn't been conclusive about its effectiveness.
Some studies suggest frequent use or high-THC products might worsen anxiety in the long run. Others indicate CBD might counteract negative effects like short-term intoxication and paranoia caused by THC.
To understand the short-term and long-term impacts of CBD and THC (the main active ingredients in cannabis), the study involved 300 people with anxiety. Some were non-users, while others had tried cannabis before.
Participants were divided into three groups:
Group 1 received a high-THC product (24% THC, 1% CBD)
Group 2 received a high-CBD product (1% THC, 24% CBD)
Group 3 received a product with equal amounts of THC and CBD (12% each)
Due to legal restrictions, participants purchased their assigned cannabis from a dispensary and used it off-campus.
For four weeks, participants could use the products as needed, averaging three times per week.
Researchers visited participants' homes with a mobile lab to test them before and after cannabis use.
The study found CBD-dominant cannabis reduced anxiety more than THC, with fewer side effects like impairment and paranoia. CBD may offer relief from anxiety without the drawbacks of THC or prescription drugs. While more research is needed, these results are encouraging.
