Does CBD Help or Harm Fatty Liver Disease?

Unfortunately, in the world we are living in, fatty liver disease whether it's non-alcoholic (NAFLD) or alcoholic based liver disease is a growing concern in the health industry.  Generally, doctors would recommend lifestyle changes like eating healthy food, getting regular exercise, controlling diabetes and cholesterol, losing weight and of course quitting alcohol, but some are thinking of using CBD to help fight their fatty liver disease.  Cannabidiol or CBD is among the 100s cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.  CBD is non-psychoactive and non addictive which comes with many positive therapeutic properties such as improving sleep, treating insomnia, pain management, anti-inflammation, antineuralgic, analgesic properties, reduce stress and anxiety and  improve immune system among other things, but can CBD have a positive effect on fatty liver disease?

Fatty Liver Disease (FLD) is a condition when fat is accumulating in the liver cells.  This can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption (alcoholic fatty liver disease) or by factors not related to alcohol such as diabetes and high cholesterol–we call this non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.  FLD, if left untreated it can lead to inflammation, scarring and worst of all liver damage.

How CBD may benefit FLD?

CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and this is essential in treating fatty liver disease. As it will slow down both the progression of the disease and inflammation.

CBD has antioxidant properties and researchers believe that fatty liver disease is closely related to oxidative stress.  Oxidative stress is when your body has an imbalance of free radicals and oxidants which are essential in helping your body and organs operate smoothly.  Experts believe the antioxidant effects found in CBD may help protect the liver from being damaged.

CBD may help improve fat metabolism.  There have been studies showing that CBD can have a part in regulating how your body stores and process fat which essentially may help reduce fat storage in your liver

While research on the correlation between CBD and fatty liver disease is still in its early stages, we will need more scientific data to be able to fully understand the potential that CBD has on the liver.  There is no concrete evidence yet whether CBD may have a direct impact on liver disease, but from the information on the characteristics of cannabidiol we can make the assumption that CBD does have a positive effect on FLD. Once the scientific community has more data, health providers and patients can have a better understanding on how to approach CBD into their daily health routine.

You must keep in mind that some studies have shown that CBD may elevate liver enzymes which may cause liver stress too so never approach CBD or any natural supplements without discussing with your health providers first.

When using CBD to treat ailments you must also consider that CBD may have any interaction with other medications.  So always consult with your doctor if you are on any medication and want to start taking CBD too.
