The World Health Organization (WHO) and many other health organizations have deemed CBD to be safe and advantageous to health. WHO said that there is no evidence that CBD is connected to any health problems, in fact it can help treat stress, anxiety, sleep, mental health issues, chronic pain and other health issues. WHO also said that CBD is not addictive and is well tolerated. Some common side effects that may arise from using CBD are dry mouth, drowsiness, nausea and changes in appetite.
Even though humans can tolerate up to 1,500mg of CBD a day, sadly there are some people who may not be able to tolerate CBD. Just like any other health supplements or medications, some may have an allergic reaction to CBD.
Here are some factors that could cause someone to have an allergic reaction to CBD:
Poor quality hemp plants.
Below par manufacturing process that fails to eliminate pesticides, molds, heavy metals and other contaminants
Pollen from a cannabis plant.
Carrier oil: CBD products like CBD oil will need to include carrier oil like MCT, Coconut, Lavender, hemp seed oil or essential oil to help your body absorb CBD into your bloodstream. MCT Oil, for example, is the most effective carrier oil, but there are some people who may be sensitive to MCT and can have allergic reactions like diarrhea, constipation, stomach cramps or skin rashes.
People that are sensitive to pollen, animal dander, animal hair or dust mites are more likely going to be allergic to CBD according to a study published in 2018.
Terpenes are natural compounds found in the cannabis plant that produce flavors and scent. Terpenes are believed to have numerous therapeutic benefits like anti-inflammation and stress relieving properties, but there have been reports that some may experience irritations from terpenes. In such a case, to avoid terpenesee or other components from the cannabis plant you may opt to use CBD products made from CBD Isolate which includes purely of CBD.
Additional components: artificial flavoring, fragrance, alcohol, and preservatives may cause sensitivity.
According to Mayo Clinic, allergies occur when your immune system is exposed to a foreign substances like pollen, animal hair, food, medication or insect bites and causes reactions that normally won't affect others.
Your immune system produces antibodies when it identifies an allergen as being harmful even though it may not be harmful. When your body contacts allergens, your immune system could produce a reaction that may lead to inflammation of the skin, sinuses, airway tract or digestive system.
Some people when using CBD especially in high doses may experience side effects from CBD like dry mouth or diarrhea as mentioned above. To avoid this it's better to start with low dosage and slowly add the amount if needed.
For people that may be prone to allergies they may experience:
Skin irritation from using CBD topicals or other CBD products.
Migraines and headaches are common reactions from allergies.
Difficulty in breathing may occur for people that may be sensitive to CBD.
If you are sensitive to allergens or suspect that you may have been allergic to something then you may want to ask your doctor to perform skin prick tests or have a blood testing done to be on the safe side.
Steps you can take to shop for the highest quality CBD products:
Study the ingredients before buying and make sure that there isn't any substance in the product that may cause you harm.
Read and always request for the Certificate of Analysis which will include lab test results of the content of the product and to make sure that it is free from pesticides, microbial and heavy metals.
Always buy from reputable brands.
Consult with your doctor first especially if you are prone to allergies or have any prior medical history.
