The National Football League (NFL) has awarded 1 billion US dollars to two research teams from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and University of Regina. The NFL are interested in finding how cannabinoids like CBD and THC can have an effect on pain management and neuroprotection when players receive concussions.

The research was initiated by The Joint Pain Management Committee which is a collaboration between the NFL and NFLPA (National Football League Players Association). The committee was set up to standardize practices by clubs and policies for pain management and the prescription of medication.
The goal of the research is to have a better understanding of an alternative pain management for players in the NFL and out of the 106 submissions from universities and research programs-two finalists were selected.

As for University of Regina they intended to investigate safety and effectiveness of cannabis/hemp-based cannabinoids concentrating on both CBD and THC especially with pain management for athletes dealing with post-concussion syndrome. The project also aims to evaluate whether cannabinoids would help reduce the need for athletes to use prescription drugs like opioids. Experts from both the United States and Canada intend to explore the neuroprotective properties of the cannabinoids in order to minimize the occurrence of acute and chronic post-concussion syndrome in athletes.
Post-concussion syndrome is a rising concern in the NFL. Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, memory loss, changes in mood and other cognitive issues. Concussion could lead to disabilities and can be life threatening.
