Trigeminal Neuralgia and CBD

Trigeminal Neuralgia is commonly known as one of the most painful disorders you can ever have. You see the trigeminal nerve’s main responsibility is to transmit sensory information like pain, temperature or pressure sensation throughout the face and head area. For the most part we are able to enjoy the benefits of trigeminal nerves like feeling the cool breeze brush your cheeks or getting pinched by your aunt in the face and even when being kissed on the lips.

Now, when the trigeminal nerve bundle in your head and facial area becomes irritated or damaged, this could lead to an abnormality in sending signals to your brain resulting in experiencing intense pain sensation. Often people will feel sensations like burning, slicing, lacerating and stabbing pain in the cheeks, eyes, mouth, teeth or ears. Due to malfunctions of the affected nerve bundle the pain can last for several hours and we call this, Trigeminal Neuralgia.

Trigeminal neuralgia is triggered by vascular compression near the stem of the brain causing irritation to the nerves and dysfunctional nerves. The affected nerves become hypersensitive and malfunction sending erratic signals and are unable to stop the sensation even after the stimulus has been removed.

These dysfunctional nerves will lead to a condition called Paroxysmal Allodynia which is a non-painful stimulus like when a soft gentle breeze hits your face and you suddenly experienced a massive pain sensation. There are other factors that could trigger paroxysmal allodynia too like tumor, cystic insect bites, traumatic incidents like car crash, facial surgery, body piercing or conditions from multiple sclerosis.

Treatment for trigeminal neuralgia will start with medications like anticonvulsant and pain killers, but medications have their side effects and risk after using it for an extended period of time. Surgical procedures are the next option like microvascular decompression, gamma knife radiosurgery or using radio frequency ablation to repair damaged nerves. During treatment people also opt for alternative treatments like using Cannabidiol to relieve pain and inflammation. Cannabidiol or CBD is used to help treat trigeminal neuralgia symptoms.

How can CBD help treat trigeminal neuralgia?

  • CBD stops the production of proinflammatory mediators. Which means that CBD has the ability to stop the immune system from overproduction of inflammation. Too much inflammation may cause unnecessary pain and discomfort.

  • We need anti-inflammatory agents to fight disease, infections and foreign objects from invading and causing harm to our system.

  • Concerning CBD and trigeminal neuralgia, studies have shown that just CB1 receptors alone or a combination of both CB1 and CB2 receptors can create an antineuralgic effect.

  • More recent studies have shown that CB2 receptors are more than enough to have a CBD-mediated antineuralgic effect.

  • A study has shown that CB2 receptors are effective in reducing pain in rats with neuropathic pain without affecting their motor skills.

  • Tests with animals and anecdotal evidence suggest that CBD and other cannabinoids may be effective in managing trigeminal neuralgia.

*Both CB1 and CB2 receptors are part of the Endocannabinoid System. CB1 receptors are found mostly in the central nervous system while CB2 receptors are found in the immune system and peripheral tissues. Both receptors play a role in regulating mood, memory, appetite, pain sensation, sleep and immune function.

Trigeminal Neuralgia is sometimes known as the suicide disease, because people with this conditions may go through horrible ordeal and but it gives us hope when we learn that CBD can help treat their conditions.
