Beyond doubt medical cannabis has come a long way. Cannabis like CBD is loaded with the potential to alleviate symptoms anywhere from minor headaches to chronic pain to insomnia to epilepsy and there are rising supports of the natural holistic supplements from health providers, scientists and patients. But with every good thing there is always a dark side–we will be focusing on marijuana today especially when you talk about Cannabis Use Disorder (CUD)?
Cannabis Use Disorder is a diagnosis based on the problematic use of marijuana causing abuse of cannabis and dependence. It is estimated that 10% out of 193 million people that use cannabis worldwide suffer from CUD.
Experts have criteria that by which cannabis users would match with at least 2 of the criteria in the past 12 months would strongly indicate you do suffer from CUD.
If you continue to use cannabis despite physical or psychological problems
If you go on to use cannabis even while facing social or relationship problems
You crave cannabis
Having difficulties controlling the urge to use cannabis
Reducing or completely giving up other activities in favor of cannabis
Having problems at home, work or school due to cannabis use
Spending too much time with cannabis
Taking cannabis in a highly questionable moment
Taking more cannabis than what is needed
Continuing to have high tolerance of cannabis
Having withdrawal symptoms when not using cannabis
Based on the criteria, experts can divide the severity into 3 groups: mild is having 2 to 3 symptoms, moderate is having 4 to 5 symptoms and severe is to have 6 or more symptoms.
**It's important to note cannabis use disorder replaced terminology like cannabis abuse or cannabis dependence which does not mean that cannabis is any less addictive especially marijuana and any other cannabis products with THC. It is also notable that CBD or Cannabidiol does not contain any psychoactive effects and is not addictive in any manner.
To diagnose cannabis use disorder, health providers must assess the patient's history with cannabis use or whether any family member has had any history of substance abuse or mental health issues. Drug tests could be used which can only confirm any use of marijuana or cannabis but not how much or how often. It is more important to know how much cannabis a person uses and how often.
Diagnosing cannabis use disorder is complicated as people with CUD may also have depression, anxiety disorders or even PTSD and some people with CUD may have already used other substances like cocaine, sedative drugs, stimulants, alcohol and ecstasy.
Experts believed that THC may be the cause of cannabis use disorder as THC contain psychoactive effects which is attached to the receptors in your body and brain that releases dopamine that acts as a rewards-giving-system of your brain that can easily help contribute to an addiction and in this case smoking cannabis products like marijuana promises people with CUD that they will get a kick from dopamine again and again. But definitely addiction is never easy to understand, especially an addiction to substances that could lead to emotional stress, mental health conditions, psychical health conditions and being in a state of emotional turmoil.
Treatment for cannabis use disorder can include medications and various therapy like cognitive behavior therapy, motivational enhancement therapy and contingency management.
After reading this you may want to consider switching to CBD instead. While marijuana can cause dependence, CBD is both non-addictive and non-psychoactive. It is not a habit forming substance and there are absolutely no withdrawal symptoms should you want to stop using CBD. The World Health Organization (WHO) also deem CBD as safe for human consumption.
