Research Shows That Daily Use of CBD Oil May Shrink Lung Tumors
A report published in BMJ Case Report that doctors have found that daily use of CBD oil is able to shrink lung tumor without traditional treatment making CBD a potential treatment for lung cancer.
Cannabidiol or CBD is an active compound or cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. CBD is among the 100s cannabinoids such as THC, CBG, CBN, CBC or THCa. CBD has numerous therapeutic benefits like pain relief, anti-inflammation, sleep inducing, stress and anxiety reducing and improving the immune system.
CBD interacts with receptors along the body known as Endocannabinoid System (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is a complex system that was first identified in the 1990s during a study of how THC interacts with the body.
The way the endocannabinoid system works is very similar to cannabinoids from the cannabis plants. It is said that our body has our own cannabinoid. The endocannabinoid system is essential to your body system and it still functions even without you introducing cannabis to your body.
The ECS is responsible for regulating nerve functions, emotion, energy, pain, inflammation, sleep and immune system. Cannabinoids like CBD and THC interact with the ECS and help enhance the functions of the body.
Scientists are studying how CBD can help with treatment for cancer. There have been positive signs on the potential of CBD in eliminating cancer cells and haunting the growth of cancer cells, but it's too early to say whether the likes of CBD and THC can really help treat or cure cancer or not. What we know for sure is that CBD can treat cancer treatment related symptoms like: pain, nausea, stress and anxiety, loss of appetite and helps to improve sleep.
Lung cancer is the focus of this study. Unfortunately, lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the UK. Survival rate is still very low even though there has been so much advance in technology. Only 15% survive 5 years after first diagnosis. Survival without treatment is around 7 months.
The study focused on a woman patient in her 80s with non-small cell lung cancer. Apart from that she also suffers from and is taking medication for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), osteoarthritis, and high blood pressure.
She smokes more than a pack per week and a total of 68 packs a year.
Her tumor during the time of diagnosis was 41mm and with no signs of spreading to other organs. She fitted the conventional treatment of surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. She refused the treatments and was put on monitor with regular CT scans every 3-6 months.
The results from the tests showed that her tumor was progressively shrinking. In June 2018 it was 41mm and by February 2021 it shrank to 10mm averaging 2.4% a month.
When asked the patient admitted that she has been taking CBD oil as an alternative treatment for her lung cancer. She started using CBD oil as a self-medication in August 2018 a little after her first diagnosis. She was advised to do so by her relatives. Her relatives shared the experience of how her husband struggled with the side effects of radiotherapy.
The patient shared that she took 0.5ml 2 to 3 times a day.
The CBD oil she used included 19.5% THC, 30% CBD and 25% of THCa. The only side effects she had from taking CBD oil is that she had reduced appetite and while still taking the same medication she still continued smoking.
We don't know yet what the right amount or CBD will help. More research on the role of CBD and cancer is needed. In the future scientists hope that they will be able to find more substantial medical proof that CBD can treat cancer.
There has been some evidence to show that CBD does have benefits for cancer patients especially with managing symptoms and side effects of cancer treatment. CBD has anti-nausea effects to help alleviate chemotherapy , pain relieving properties to help battle discomfort that can occur during cancer treatment and CBD also helps to promote sleep and let your body get the rest it needs for recrupation.
CBD is also known to have anti-anxiety properties to help patients go through the uncertainty period.
CBD also has anti-inflammatory effects to help battle inflammation and pain.
While still in the early stages of research, CBD has shown that it has potential to be anti-tumor, inhibits the growth of cancer cells and induce cancer cells death.
More research on humans are needed and it would be a while until researchers can fully confirm how CBD can impact CBD.
CBD should always be used as a complementary treatment along with conventional treatment prescribed by a medical specialist. It's important to discuss with your medical provider if you are interested in using CBD oil as one of your treatment regiments.
