What Does Research Say About CBD and Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the most common eye condition that causes vision loss in people aged 50 and above.

AMD can also be affected by smoking, people with high blood pressure and from diets with high fat saturation.

AMD affects the Macular which is the center of the visual field responsible for detailed and sharp vision that is required for reading and recognizing faces.

Even though AMD affects the central vision, but rarely will it caused blindness.

There is no cure for AMD, but there are treatment and medications that can prevent and slow down progression of the disease.

The are two types of age-related macular degeneration: dry and wet.

Dry AMD is the most common type of AMD which progresses very slowly. The macular gradually deteriorates due to build up of drusen and thinning of Macular tissues.

Wet AMD is much more advanced and severe than dry AMD, but less common. Blood vessels grow abnormally under the Macular which may leak blood and fluid substance into the retina. The leakage can cause immediate and severe damage to Macular and cause major loss and disabilities to the central vision.

Symptoms of Age-Related Marculare Degeneration includes: having blurry vision, having difficulty in recognizing familiar faces, straight line appears wavy, a dark spot appearing in the center of your vision, losing central vision which is essential to driving or reading.

Research on CBD and Age-Related Macular Degeneration:

More research is needed to fully understand how CBD can help treat AMD, but from what we know, researchers are optimistic that one day, CBD can be used as a treatment for AMD.

Cannabis is known to lower eye pressure. Do note that in many studies THC is known to lower pressure in the eyes while CBD is the opposite, therefore CBD should not be used to treat glaucoma.

CBD is known for its anti-inflammation properties even for the eyes.

Just a friendly reminder CBD products like CBD oil are meant to be used orally and not as eye drops.

Researchers have found that CBD's anti-inflammation properties can reduce risk of AMD.

They also found that cannabis has anti- angiogenic properties that will help to speed up loss of blood vessels.

CBD interacts with the Endocannabinoid System which are receptors located around your body.

The ECS is responsible for regulating pain management, sleep cycle, inflammation mood, anxiety and stress levels, appetite and memory.

As you are aware that CBD has many therapeutic properties such as improving sleep, treat insomnia, relief pain, anti-inflammatory properties, reducing stress and anxiety, treating motion sickness and helping improve the immune system.

If you are interested in using CBD to enhance your health or to treat illness like AMD it is highly recommended that you consult with your doctor. Discuss the advantages and disavanrages of using CBD. What is the best kind of CBD to use and how to best use it.
